If you?re a resident of Baltimore, get ready for your quarterly water and sewer bill to increase. Water bills in the city are going up in order to help pay to replace aging infrastructure that has seen significant problems with water main breaks.
This year, the water bill will increase by about $80 altogether, or $20 per quarter. This will bring the average quarterly bill up to $201 from $181. Water bills will increase again in a year on next July first, again by about $20 per quarter, to make the average quarterly bill $223. ?For senior citizens who apply ? and for poor residents who pass a household income means test ? a water rate discount is available in the city. Residents are asked to call 410-396-5398 for information or an application,? according to the Baltimore Brew. The Brew also notes that:
With the added revenue from the rate hikes, DPW promises to improve its oft-criticized customer service, develop proactive maintenance practices, cover the city?s open-water reservoirs with storage tanks, and accelerate the replacement of water mains, some dating back to the 19th century.
All told, water and sewer bills in the city are going up by 11%. It?s not all bad news, however. To make up for the increase in water bills, Baltimore residents will see their property tax rate for homeowners drop 5%.
